As we age, falls become a primary concern for seniors. According to the National Institute on Aging, falls are the leading cause of accidents and injuries for people over age 65. While the risk of falls can cause worry for the aging population and their families, it doesn’t have to be a reality. Falls are preventable and Marin Home Care would like to share 6 ways you can start working to prevent falls today.
1. Stand Up Slowly
It may seem simple but, all too often, falls are caused by seniors moving from sitting to standing too quickly. This is one of the most common causes of falls. When standing, don’t rush and ensure you have something to hold on to that can help you steady yourself.
2. Stay Active and Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle
Studies show that seniors who remain physically active and have a healthy diet are less likely to experience falls. Exercise helps keep muscles strong, thus lowering the risk of falling. Keeping your body hydrated and consuming a well balanced, healthy diet also keeps your body strong and will help lower your overall risk of falling as you age.
3. Choose Sensible Footwear
When it comes to selecting shoes, it is important to remember that this is one of the most important ways to prevent falls in seniors. Selecting a shoe with a non-skid rubber sole is the best option. Additionally, you may also want to ensure that you have something to wear around the house that has the same feature. Simply wearing socks creates risk as they can be slippery on hard surfaces. Choose a slipper or house shoe that has a firm rubber sole to maintain safety inside your home as well as outside.
4. Understand the Medications You Take & Their Risks
Medication side effects can cause falls in seniors. Did you know many common medications can cause lowered blood pressure or weakened muscles if not managed appropriately? These could create the perfect opportunity for falls to happen if you are not aware of the potential risks. Take time to talk to your doctor about the prescription medications you take daily to ensure they do not create any adverse effects that could ultimately lead to falls.
5. Beware of Wet or Icy Surfaces
Wet or icy sidewalks can be a major concern for seniors when it comes to falls. If you have to walk alone on a wet or slippery surface, try to look for a handrail to hold on to and take your time.
6. Don’t Be Afraid to Utilize Assistive Devices
While some seniors may be hesitant to admit they could benefit from utilizing a cane or walker, these tools can be some of the best methods to prevent falls. Understandably, it can be difficult for some to accept that they require some assistance while walking. It is important to remember those devices are not there to be a nuisance or signal the downfall of independence. Rather, walkers, canes, and other assistive items can create more independence for seniors and provide the extra support needed to prevent falls and help keep them mobile for years to come.
